African Woman Overcomes Challenges, Attains PhD in Law after Growing Up in Refugee Home

Juliet Gudo, a Zimbabwean, faced a challenging upbringing, losing both parents before the age of 8. She moved in with her grandmother, who also passed away, leaving Juliet in the care of family members eager to arrange her marriage by the age of 12.

Following her grandmother’s death, Juliet migrated from Zimbabwe to South Africa as a minor and sought refuge at a center in Limpopo, where she resided for eight years, as reported by Women Power Africa.

During her time at the refugee home, a humanitarian organization collaborated with them to ensure that the children resumed their education. This opportunity allowed Juliet, who had missed nine years of schooling, to re-enter Grade 11.

She excelled in high school, gaining admission to the University of Limpopo, South Africa, where she earned a Bachelor of Laws (LLB). Subsequently, she pursued postgraduate studies at the University of Cape Town.

Juliet achieved her Master’s in Law in Commercial Law (LL.M) from the University of Cape Town and successfully applied for a doctorate degree, receiving multiple scholarships.

Now, she proudly holds a Ph.D. in Commercial Law from the University of Cape Town. Sharing her accomplishments on LinkedIn, Juliet emphasized the hard work and dedication that propelled her to this remarkable achievement.
