Details of Fully Funded Ireland Fellows Program
The Ireland Fellows Program aims to develop future leaders, enhance local capacities to achieve national SDG goals, and foster positive ties with Ireland.
This program is designed to empower graduates to contribute to capacity building in their home countries through the skills they acquire, positioning them as the next generation of leaders in their fields.
Additionally, it envisions graduates fostering lasting positive personal and professional relationships with Ireland, thereby encouraging institutional linkages.
Requirements for Fully Funded Ireland Fellows Program
To qualify for the Ireland Fellows Program – Africa award beginning at the start of the 2024 academic year, applicants must meet the following criteria:
Residency: Be a resident national of one of the following countries: Angola, Burundi, Democratic Republic of the Congo, Djibouti, Eritrea, Eswatini, Ethiopia, Kenya, Lesotho, Liberia, Malawi, Mozambique, Nigeria, Rwanda, Senegal, Sierra Leone, Somalia, South Sudan, Sudan, Tanzania, Uganda, Zambia, or Zimbabwe.
Work Experience: Have a minimum of two to three years of substantial work experience relevant to the proposed programme(s) of study, as specified per country (see Page 8 for details).
Educational Qualification: Hold a bachelor’s level academic qualification from an accredited and government-recognised higher education institution, with a minimum GPA of 3.0 on a 4.0 scale, equivalent to a first-class or second-class honor. The qualification must have been awarded in 2012 or later (within the last 12 years).
Higher Education: Not hold a qualification at the master’s level or higher, nor be currently undertaking or scheduled to start a master’s level or higher program in the academic year 2024/25.
Programme Commencement: Apply to begin a new master’s level program in Ireland starting no earlier than August 2024.
Demonstrable Skills: Show evidence of leadership abilities and aspirations, a commitment to achieving the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) in their home country, and a dedication to fostering positive relationships with Ireland.

Eligible master’s level programmes in Ireland begin in August or September each year and typically last between 10 and 16 months, depending on the specific programme.

Application Process
The application process consists of three stages:
- Stage 1: Preliminary Application
- Stage 2: Detailed Application
- Stage 3: Interviews
English Language Testing
- All applicants progressing beyond the second stage will need to take an online Duolingo English Test.
- If shortlisted after the interview stage, applicants must take another English language test, usually the IELTS exam, unless they already possess an IELTS certificate from 2022 or later, showing the required score for their intended course(s).
Note: Early preparation for the IELTS exam is strongly advised, even for native English speakers.
